Reviewing your Software

Software

As we move more into the digital age, we are more reliant on software and the efficiencies that this has to help us to grow and even scale a business.

When to review this

It is important to review this on at least an annual basis to make sure that the software itself is keeping up the latest industry trends and capabilities.

It is worth looking at competitors’ software and comparing this to the current software that you use but do not look to change just because it offers more. What you should be doing is looking at the current software providers roadmap and seeing if this is on them.

The important part is that as humans we do not all like change and buy in from your team is essential to the success of moving software.

Things to consider:

  • Proper cost benefit analysis before changing software.
  • The cost involved in training all the team as it may get time before everyone is up to date on this.
  • Before changing have a team meeting to get the thoughts of the team, and depending how large the team is getting them to view the demonstration, so they feel involved from the start on the process.

We start to review our software across the board in quarter 3 so that this in clear in the strategy for the year end.

Desktop or Cloud

It could be that you are looking to move this from being desktop/server based to the cloud as this is the way the technology is moving for small and micro business.

One thing that ticks the box is that it is back up by the provider, but you will need to make sure that you have adequate security on computer and laptop.

Demonstrations

It is always worth reaching out to your software providers and get an up-to-date demonstration there may be updates to the software that you are unaware of and may improve efficiencies.

Best of Breed Software

You may make the decision to use industry leading software rather that software that is linked to existing software.

If you go this route you need to consider:

  • New clients will need to be one by one onto each software.
  • Linked software you will only need to make new client entries once and it will flow through on all software.
  • Is there anything on their roadmap to partner with any of the software you use as for them this can be a lengthy process.
